Heatstroke Management Solution

Solution Description

To reduce heatstroke damage, Alibaba Cloud has developed a cloud based solution to do a certain number of “human monitoring” and “environmental monitoring” for providing information on heatstroke risks to outdoor workforces who are exposed to hot weather. This solution has been successfully delivered to Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Use Case

Work-related accidents due to heatstroke are occurring in many regions during hot summer time, the possibility of heatstroke increases, and in some cases, fatal accidents occur. Therefore, various measures are being taken to prevent heatstroke in the construction industry and other workers.


The Heatstroke Management Solution (HSM) provides information and monitoring (people and environment) on heatstroke through cloud services to avoid the risk of heatstroke by detecting abnormalities and promoting hydration as soon as possible, and promoting a break in a cool place.


Cloud technology helps analysing the body temperature, heart rate and environment index, keeps the working staff safe from getting heatstroke. There is front end mobile app + central system running on cloud. The system uses a sensor device and smartphone to acquire data and upload it to the cloud.


This solution implements two major heatstroke determinations. First, Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) values are obtained for environmental monitoring. This has a fixed calculation method and standard, which are followed.


For human monitoring, the solution has integrated an algorithm which can realise deep body temperature estimation from tympanic temperature rather than standard esophagus temperature and rectal temperature in the medical field. In the laboratory, further development of an algorithm to detect heat stroke can predict the rise in tympanic temperature (deep temperature) from heart rate change. This algorithm has been patented.
